The history and pharmacological properties

of the Hedychium gardnerianum plant

In this lecture you will learn to know Hedychium gardnerianum, an evergreen plant with a beautiful and attractive flower.

We will see where does it comes from, its biology, its natural environment and the enormous quantity of names that this plant is called, in the Azores and also around the world.

 

In Almost every Azorean island this plant is an invasive plant. The Azorean people have learned through study to use this plant for different purposes, such as manufacturing sustainable plates and cups, and also distilling a fantastic essential oil, using the whole plant or just the flower.

 

From academic research we know that this essential oil have several pharmacological effects, it has analgesic, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, anti-allergic, anthelmintic and strong antioxidant properties that makes possible an aromatic application of these oils as co-adjuvants in the treatment of cognitive diseases such as Alzheimer and dementia.
